Returning Lunchboxes at the Return Machine:

Terms and Conditions:

  1. Please read Terms and Conditions carefully. By using the Lunchbox Lending Machines, users agree to accept unconditionally all the Terms and Conditions. 

  2. The Lunchbox Lending Machines are only available to HKU students and staff with a valid HKU portal account. HKU students and staff are required to login the GreenU function in the HKU App in order to operate the Lunchbox Lending Machines. 

  3. Reusable lunchboxes are provided to support B.Y.O. (Bring Your Own) food purchases. Other uses are strictly prohibited. 

  4. All lunchboxes remain the property of Sustainability Unit. Users borrow lunchboxes on a temporary basis and must return them in good condition. 

  5. To ensure fair access for the entire campus community, each user has a loan quota of 5 lunchboxes.

  6. All borrowed lunchboxes must be returned by the end of the current academic year (e.g. lunchboxes borrowed in academic year 2026–27, must be returned by 31 August 2027).  

  7. Failure to return lunchboxes within the specified time frame may result in a suspension of lending privileges. 

  8. The Return Machine is designed strictly to process official HKU Sustainability Unit lunchboxes. Returns of external, third-party, or personal lunchboxes are not allowed and will be rejected by the machine.

  9. Users earn 5 GreenU Points upon the successful return of a lunchbox to the Return Machine (subject to review). The GreenU Points will be credited to the user's GreenU account instantly upon verification by the Machine. 

  10. A maximum of 10 GreenU Points can be earned per day by returning lunchboxes (subject to review). Subsequent returns on the same day will be processed normally, but no additional GreenU Points will be awarded once the daily limit is reached. 

  11. GreenU Points earned through this service are non-transferable. 

  12. Users are responsible for removing all food residue and emptying the lunchbox before returning it to the Return Machine. 

  13. Lunchboxes must be returned with their lids securely locked. 

  14. Users must handle the borrowed lunchboxes with care. In cases of intentional damage, improper use, or severe contamination, Sustainability Unit reserves the right to suspend the user's lending privileges. 

  15. The Sustainability Unit reserves the right to modify, suspend, or update the service arrangements, rules, or terms and conditions at any time without prior notice. 

  16. In case of dispute, the decision of Sustainability Unit shall be final.

Designed to foster a sustainable culture on campus, the machines are now fully integrated into the GreenU function of the HKU App, allowing students and staff to easily borrow reusable containers while encouraging a vibrant B.Y.O. culture and earning GreenU Points at the same time!
