Programme Overview

HKU Sustainability Leadership Programme (SLP) 2026-27, organised by the Sustainability Unit of Estates Office, empowers students to develop sustainability leadership skills and drive positive environmental changes throughout their university journey.

 

The programme features a flexible, multi-year framework where your experience accumulates over time — allowing you to advance your leadership pathway progressively across multiple academic years.

We are recruiting passionate undergraduate students to drive HKU’s sustainability initiatives. Join us to develop practical skills, lead campus sustainability events, and receive remuneration in recognition of your contributions!

Programme Structure

For the Academic Year 2026-27, members must choose either the Docent Team or the Workshop Team. Members will engage in targeted trainings and workshops to gain comprehensive understanding of sustainability issues while sharpening leadership, project management, and communication skills.

Lead HKU Sustainability Campus Tours for the HKU community, and support campus biodiversity mapping

Design and facilitate interactive green lifestyle workshops for the HKU community

  • Workshop facilitation and public speaking skills

  • Visit to a local green organisation

The Leadership Progression Pathway

A step-by-step pathway where your accumulated contributions translate into recognised leadership and higher levels.

Level 1: Sustainability Ambassador

Core Role: Support and execute campus sustainability events & student-led activities

Requirement: Baseline Entry for all new members

Level 2: Sustainability Leader

Core Role: Team leadership, project coordination and execution

Requirement: ≥40 cumulative contribution hours

Membership Renewal Requirement

To remain eligible for subsequent academic years, members must fulfil the following minimum contributions:

  • Complete at least 5 contribution hours in Sustainability Unit-led events per academic year

  • Participate in at least one student-led activity within the first 2 years of joining the SLP

Recognition & Rewards

At the end of the Academic Year 2026-27, members can unlock rewards and level-based recognition based on their cumulative contribution hours:

2026-27 Cohort Engagement Rewards

Members who contribute at least 5 hours to Sustainability Unit-led events during the Academic Year 2026-27 are eligible to enjoy a ​Coral Exploration at Hoi Ha Wan

Eligibility

  • Full-time HKU students

  • Have a passion for or interest in sustainability

  • Possess a strong sense of responsibility and motivation, and be capable of effective communication and aligning expectations

​Q1: Is prior experience required to join?

Answer:

No! Our interactive and hands-on training sessions will equip you with the skills and confidence needed to support sustainability events, lead activities, and facilitate workshops effectively.

Q2: Is the programme open to all study years?

Answer:

Yes, all full-time HKU students are welcome. As the SLP is a progressive, multi-year programme, joining earlier gives you more opportunities to accumulate contribution hours and progress to higher leadership level across your academic years.
